Census 2023:– The National Population Commission (NPC) leadership has called on the media to increase the level of publicity and public education about the upcoming exercise after claiming that the trial census, a prelude to the national headcount scheduled for March 29 to April 2 this year, saw a low turnout of Nigerians.

This was said yesterday by Dr. Tony Aiyejina, the Federal Commissioner for NPC Edo State, at a one-day training in Benin City on developing the skills of journalists to effectively cover the population and housing census in 2023.

He praised President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing the statistics , saying that it was urgently needed for national planning after the previous exercise was completed in 2006.

This year’s exercise, according to Aiyejina, will be totally digital for the first time.

Let no one mislead you; this census will be accurate because the technology we are using cannot be compromised. Permit me to commend the current administration for making the audacious decision to conduct the national statistics, which is being spearheaded by President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR).

“The current Commission resolved to conduct a digital census for the nation, the first of its type in Nigeria, with the Administration’s cooperation and permission.

Because all procedures before, during, and after the statistics will be carried out on digital platforms and devices, it was a paradigm shift of epochal proportions.

“Nigerians need to be informed and taught about this new method of conducting statistics. Because of this, the media will be essential to this census operation as the fourth estate of the realm.

This is the major justification of hosting this workshop for journalists to develop their capacity. They will have the chance to learn the fundamental ideas and procedures involved in taking a census, which will eventually lead to good statistics reporting.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) State Director, Mr. Ayodele Okiei, stated in his introductory remarks that the statistics would also assist INEC in making decisions regarding the creation of new constituencies, which he said would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
