Tinubu Declares Free Interstate Transportation: Beginning on December 21, drivers will be required to pay 50% of the cost of interstate travel. During the same time frame, train passengers will receive free transportation.
However, since the reimbursement is only available to the general public, it does not apply to airline passengers.
Bela Tinubu, the president of Nigeria, has approved a 50% reimbursement for interstate bus travel on 22 luxury routes in response to worries about rising transportation costs.
This was said by Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake on Wednesday, December 20, during a press briefing at the State House.
According to him, the president has also given the go-ahead for Nigerians who want to go by rail to different regions of the nation to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
This includes transportation within the same time frame along the Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, and Warri-Itakpe corridors.
A report from This Day states that the authorized refund will be valid from Thursday, December 21, to January 4, 2024.
This comes after Legit. ng revealed that travelers may have to pay up to N50,000 for interstate travel, significantly raising the cost of interstate transportation.
Return for the general public
The change, according to Alaka, the chairman of the Interministerial Committee on Presidential Intervention, is a part of the administration’s attempt to make life easier for Nigerians, particularly during the holiday season.
He mentioned that people who want to spend the holidays with their loved ones will benefit from this.
No reimbursement for travelers via plane
Alaska stated that the intervention will not be extended to air travel because it is intended for the general public.
He declared:
“The President feels that for those who want to go to see their loved ones in the spirit of the holiday, the federal government should intervene to reduce the cost of public transportation. of Christmas and as evidence of his love for Nigerians.
“The recent rise in interstate transportation costs is something that the President is well aware of.
The minister stated that to smoothly implement this unique presidential proposal, the Federal Government will collaborate with road transport unions, transporters, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation through the Ministry of Transportation.

He continued, saying:
“From today, major interstate transportation hubs in Nigeria, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Ibadan, Akure, Maiduguri, Sokoto, and other locations, will offer half the cost of interstate travel to Nigerians.”
