2023 Census News: The Akwa Ibom State Government has given the National Population Commission (NPC) the responsibility of making sure that equity, justice, and fairness are applied to the data that will be obtained from the impending 2023 Population and Housing Census.
The NPC delegation, led by Chief Benedict Ukpong, the federal commissioner who represents the state before the Commission, was hosted by the state’s commissioner for information and strategy, Ini Ememobong, on Monday in Uyo.
Ememobong stressed that the census is a numbers game, as demonstrated by the upcoming elections in 2023, and he urged the Commission to apply equality, justice, and fairness in the process by accurately determining the state’s population.
After bemoaning the widespread unacceptability of figures in earlier exercises in Nigeria, the information commissioner expressed hope that with digitization in the forthcoming census, equity and justice will play a role in the data that will be produced and distributed in the 2023 event.
Observing that no discussion of the forthcoming census would be complete without mentioning numbers, he asserted that Governor Udom Emmanuel, who comes from the data, economics, and banking industries, is very particular about numbers and concerned about the results, particularly those that will come from the state.
He commended the NPC Federal Commissioner who was born in the state for his good job so far and pledged that the state government will keep supporting the success of the 2023 Census.
According to him, “the commission developed the e-recruitment portal, where everyone had the opportunity to register and participate in the census, based on merit and experience,” he added.
