How to retrieve your barred mobile phone numbers: According to the Nigerian Communications Commission, there is a chance that the more than 40 million phone lines that were blocked for not connecting to National Identity Numbers could soon be brought back.
Reuben Mouka, the NCC’s director of public affairs, said this in an interview with PUNCH Online on Tuesday.
He claims that the phone lines that their telecom providers blocked have gone beyond the date set by the commission on February 28, 2024, which requires telecom users to connect their Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) to their NIN.
“If the barred lines are not acted upon within the next 180 days,” he declared. They will only be allowed to text and make calls; they won’t be able to accept calls. However, they would not be allowed to make calls after the allotted time, and they could have to give up their lines to their service provider in 365 days.
But to unbar your phone lines, PUNCH Online outlines the retrieval procedures as our correspondent was informed by the NCC’s Director of Publicity.

1. If you are a subscriber who hasn’t registered for your NIN, register your SIM card at one of the authorized locations nationwide.
2. Next, use the channels your service provider has provided to link the NIN with your SIM.
3. To link your SIM using the channels your service providers have provided, or to visit your service provider center and present the NIN, users with registered NINs only need to do so.
4. However, you may easily obtain your NIN using your cell phone by dialing *346# to obtain the number if you have a NIN but forgot it.
5. If the phone number you used to enroll for your NIN is the same, choose “NIN Retrieval” from the list of possibilities and enter “1.”
6. Comply with the instructions on the screen and enter the necessary data.
7. Take note that there is an N20 cost (which is deducted from your phone’s airtime balance) for using this service.
8. Nevertheless, certain USSD codes have been assigned by the nation’s four mobile network operators to enable a smooth and speedy pairing of your NIN and SIM cards. They are listed in the following order:
A. For Customers of MTN
To link a phone number, dial *785#, enter your NIN, and press the submit button. Alternatively, dial *785*Your NIN# from the phone number you want to link. Your NIN will be instantly linked to the number.
B. Send “UPDATENIN NIN FirstName and LastName” to 109 if you’re a Glo customer.
C. For Users of Airtel
To link, just call *121*1# right now.
D. For Users of 9Mobile
Enter *200*8# and adhere to the on-screen instructions.
