Latest NPC News Today: House of Representatives to summon NPC director over N200 billion spent on suspended census The House of Representatives has begun an investigation into the N200 billion intended for the 2023 Population and Housing Census, which has been postponed.

Following the adoption of the resolution “Need to Investigate N200 Billion Spent on the Suspension of 2023 Population and Housing Census,” which was proposed by Hon.

Clement Akanni during the House plenary in Abuja on Thursday, the House instructed its population committee to invite the director-general of the National Population Commission, NPC, to explain the N200 billion.

The House adopted the motion and stated that a census is a methodical process of gathering, assembling, and evaluating demographic, social, and economic information on a population living in a certain area.

The legislators also mentioned that governments hold censuses to obtain precise and thorough data on things like age, sex, marital status, education, employment, housing, and other pertinent socioeconomic and demographic aspects of a nation.

The House declared that it was aware that the National Population Commission’s 2006 census, which was the most recent one, had reported a population of 140 million.

It further stated that it was aware that another census was scheduled to be conducted in 2022 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, but that the program was later rescheduled for 2023.

The House recalled that Clem Agba, the former minister of state for budget and national planning, had stated earlier in March 2023 that the exercise, including post-census activities, would cost a total of N869 billion.

It also brought up the National Population Commission’s (NPC) claim that it has invested almost $200 billion in getting ready for the population and housing census scheduled for 2023.

The House expressed distress upon discovering that previous President Muhammadu Buhari had put off the exercise indefinitely, just days before he departed from office.

The population committee was asked by the House to look into the subject further and report back.
