Foreign Jobs: Over 1000 Nigerians Lost Up to $10,000 Each After Being Scammed Check Here
Foreign Jobs: According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) of the United Nations, over a thousand Nigerians have fallen victim to fraudulent job offers in the United Kingdom.
This was revealed at a press conference held in Abuja on Monday by Laurent De Boeck, the Chief of Mission of IOM. Boeck reported that in their desperate attempts to find employment abroad, some of the victims lost as much as $10,000 apiece.
According to him, some victims are unable to return home, while others are embarrassed to see their families again, which is why they are left behind in the UK.
“Some of them lost over $10,000, but they were able to obtain visas because they were provided with fictitious employment letters.”
The groups let them know that they are not the letters’ source when they show up and present the correspondence. “It affects more than a thousand people,” stated the man.
Additionally, he said that in 2023, more than 260,000 Nigerians had contacted the organization to receive advice on how to migrate via authorized or normal ways as well as to undertake pre-departure medical examinations.
Boeck went on to note that IOM is working with partners to repatriate hundreds of people, including Nigerians, from Tunisia, which recently enacted a travel ban.
According to Boeck, there has been an approximate yearly increase of 30% in displacement in several North West states over the last five years. He claimed that banditry and other criminal activities were the main causes of the rise, pointing out that Zamfara was still the region most affected.
“Because there are migrants and internally displaced individuals in Kano, we are seeing an increase in the number of migrants from Kano visiting our offices in Libya and Niger,” he stated.
“IOM recognized and assisted 682 victims of human trafficking in 2023, putting special attention on vulnerable populations such as children who are unaccompanied or separated from their parents, individuals with impairments, and survivors of gender-based abuse.
“In collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria, IOM facilitated the reintegration and allowed the return of 4,431 Nigerians.” In total, 2,853 individuals received assistance with reintegration and took part in socioeconomic activities of their personal choice.

In 2023, IOM’s Migration Health efforts demonstrated its commitment to comprehensive healthcare. These efforts included more than 260,000 Pre-Departure Medical Health Assessments, the diagnosis and referral of 166 migrants with tuberculosis, the administration of 15,000 vaccine doses, and the renovation of three public hospitals, according to a statement.
