U.S. assures NDLEA of more support, collaboration on fight against illicit drugs
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, has received assurances from the US government that it will get additional help and collaboration in all facets of its strategic operations to strengthen its capacity to combat drug misuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.
Dr. Mark Hove of the Africa and Middle East Office, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, US State Department, provided the assurance on June 1st while accompanying Craig Nixon, another senior official of the Bureau, on a courtesy visit to Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

NDLEA News :- This follows a recent formal letter from the Bureau announcing a funding from the United States for the NDLEA in response to requests made by Gen. Marwa during a series of meetings in Abuja and Washington, DC.
The support grant, according to the letter, will be used by the UNODC in Nigeria to support the agency’s capacity for forensic and chemical analysis, intelligence-led investigations using a variety of resources, as well as legal books and an electronic library for prosecution and other legal requirements.
In his remarks during the visit on Wednesday, Mark Hove praised the outstanding job completed thus far by the Marwa-led NDLEA and expressed satisfaction with the Agency’s reaction to the threat posed by lethal illegal narcotics including Fentanyl, Captagon, and Methamphetamine. He highlighted the amazing achievement of the NDLEA’s recent seizure of more than 2.1 tons of cocaine in the Ikorodu neighborhood of Lagos.
Hove claimed that the purpose of his visit was to talk about potential areas of further help and cooperation for the Agency. With the NDLEA success story, he claimed, the Agency is well situated to serve as a training facility for other anti-drug organizations in Africa.
Gen. Marwa thanked the INL for its assistance to the Agency and remarked on his willingness to do more in his reply. When combined with the National Assembly’s recent amendment to the Agency’s enabling Act, he claimed that this will considerably improve the NDLEA’s capacity for both investigation and prosecution.
