In response to a question on the significance of the census, he stated: “When the British colonized Nigeria, they made it mandatory to conduct the headcount so that they would know how many citizens the colonial authority would have to look for. Our most recent census took place in 2006. Michael Imoudu was given the exclusive right to perform worker education in the same way that NPC was given the authority to do headcounts. Our institute was established in 1983—40 years ago—by the late President Shehu Shagari.
We are fortunate to have what I can only describe as an anniversary sensitization program with NPC as we celebrate this amazing institute’s 40th anniversary this year. We need a census because we would like to collaborate with everything that might advance knowledge, literacy, and understanding.
Alhaji Nasir Issa Kwarra, the National Chairman of the National Population Commission, urged Nigerians in his speech to “join the Commission in the bid to give our dear country, reliable demographic data through the impending 2023 census.” This is due to the fact that our population continues to be our country’s greatest asset, and it needs to be utilized in order to improve the quality of life for our people.

He emphasized that Nigeria is the seventh most populous country in the world and, based on current growth rates, will overtake China and India as the third most populous country in 2050. However, he said that it would be unwise to base policy decisions for a nation that is home to a sizeable portion of the world’s population on estimates from a census taken 16 years ago.
“The country’s inability to conduct a population census in the last 16 years has created an information vacuum as the data from the last census conducted in 2006 has been rendered less useful for planning purposes,” he claimed, noting that the information that will be generated from the 2023 Census will greatly aid in local government governance and the socio-economic planning and development of the country as a whole.
I also want to take this opportunity to reassure Nigerians, especially organized labor, that the Commission is firmly committed to positively rewriting the nation’s census history and bringing a census that will be purposefully relevant in the effort to achieve sustainable national development to this great nation.
The Commission is certain that there is a better chance than ever for a precise and credible census, he added.
