Ifad Agrihub Project News $5m Ifad Grants for Farmers: According to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), problems with federal government management were the reason behind the $5 million grant’s delayed disbursement, which was intended to help smallholder farmers combat climate change.
To assist farmers through its Value Chain Development Project (VCDP) in combating climate change, IFAD announced an Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme (ASAP) grant of $5 million during the devastating flood of 2022 that devastated the livelihood of many farmers in the nation.
This was said by Dr. Donal Brown, Associate Vice President of the IFAD, Rome, yesterday in Abuja at a news conference to conclude his formal visit to Nigeria.
We should be able to release the $5 million ASAP award, but as I mentioned before, certain management-related concerns need to be resolved. We may disburse that amount as soon as they are resolved,” he stated.
As he reviewed IFAD portfolio initiatives in Nigeria, Dr. Brown remarked, “We have been here since 1978.” In Nigeria, we have expended roughly $1.5 billion. Right now, we have roughly $400 million in assets.
Every three years, we invest between $100 million and $110 million, and we’re excited about our next initiatives. In collaboration with the government, we are creating a brand-new project to assist northern Nigeria’s production value chains and climate adaptation.

He referred to the organization’s current initiatives in the nation, Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprise – Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) and VCDP Additional Financing (AF), as “very successful.”
However, he stated that the federal government’s request for an extension of the projects could only be granted if it resolved some of the flaws found during the review mission, such as the federal government’s management of the programs and certain participating states’ failure to pay counterpart funds.
