Food Security Update Today 28 February 2024
Food Security Update:To increase productivity and ensure food and nutrition security, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning (FMBNP), has provided agricultural inputs to 250 smallholder farmers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja who are considered vulnerable.
The empowerment program falls under the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS), which is intended to target poverty at its source and accelerate Nigerians’ economic growth, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Speaking at the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) training and empowerment event in Gwagwalada, Abuja, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Temitope Fadeshemi, stated that the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Service (FDAE) and the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS) have carefully counted and validated about 250 farmers to be a part of this ground-breaking program.

The initiative’s goals, according to Fadeshemi, who was accompanied by Mr. Michael Brooks, Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Services, are to empower smallholder farmers, increase productivity, and ensure food and nutrition security.
He clarified that the farmers are prioritized under President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” Agenda since they are not only the backbone of the agriculture sector but also the beating heart of national wealth.
Additionally, he exhorted the participating farmers to recognize the critical role they play in determining the course of agricultural progress in the country.
He claims that the ministry is bringing about positive change using programs like training and empowerment, which are aimed at giving smallholder farmers the tools, resources, and assistance they need to prosper in a constantly changing agricultural environment.
He said, “We are laying the groundwork for a more resilient and prosperous agricultural sector as we arm these farmers with the tools to enhance productivity, improve resilience, and embrace sustainable practices.”
In his welcome speech, Brooks, represented by Director II of FDAES, Dr. Deola Lordbanjou, stated that free inputs are given to farmers in appreciation for the excellent work they undertake to increase their output.
Mrs. Lydia Oke, a beneficiary, expressed her gratitude for the support and intervention provided to smallholder farmers and pledged to use the supplies sparingly.
