FG plans a new national identity card with financial and social service functions

The Federal Government will shortly introduce a new national identity card featuring financial and social service features. The new national identity card project is a partnership between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

According to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the new national ID card is an innovative identity solution that includes payment capabilities for all social and financial activities.

The idea would be supported by AfriGO, a national domestic card program. Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, revealed this in a statement in Abuja.

The statement read: “The National ID card, loaded with verifiable National Identity elements, is supported by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which requires the NIMC to enroll and issue a General Multipurpose Card, GMPC, to Nigerians and legal residents.

“This card would meet the demand for physical identification by allowing cardholders to confirm their identity, access government and private social services, facilitate financial inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower people, and inspire greater participation in nation-building.

“Only registered nationals and legal residents having the National Identification Number (NIN) will be able to request the card.

“The card, which will be produced by ICAO standards, will serve as the country’s default national identity card.”

“In addition to this feature, cardholders will be able to use their cards as debit or prepaid cards by attaching them to their preferred bank accounts.

“The card will provide qualified citizens, particularly those who are financially excluded from social and financial services, with access to a variety of government intervention programs.
