scholarly works accepted for funding under the National Research Fund (NRF) grant program.
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) oversees the NRF.
Following a thorough screening process that began in March 2023 with the receipt of 4,287 Concept Notes from potential applicants, the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee recommended funding for 185 research proposals. This recommendation was followed by the approval, which was given by Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education.
The organization made this announcement on Wednesday, January 17, in Abuja, through a statement released by its Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdulmumin Oniyangi, on behalf of TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono.
The approval breakdown showed that N759,875,400.00 was approved for the Humanities and Social Science; N583,669,300.63 was approved for the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group; and N46 million to over N46 million was approved for Cross-Cutting.
The statement mentioned the following: Application of the Hydro-Biogeochemical Framework to Develop a National Rural Water Quality Assurance Plan for Sustainable Water Quality Management in Nigeria is one of the approved research works under the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group;
Among other things, the development of an intelligent multi-chamber evaporative cooling preserver system for the post-harvest storage of specific fruits in Nigeria, the use of doubling haploid maize lines to increase yield and tolerance to armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda), and the creation of an electric vehicle with unique tracking features are all being undertaken.
The Cross-Cutting thematic group is working on projects such as using plastic waste and scrap tires as aggregate conductive material for renewable energy storage systems, developing appropriate technology to produce aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes for use in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, developing an affordable low-voltage programmable electroporator, and researching pulsed electric fields for cancer treatment and wound healing, among other things.
Digital Financial Inclusion, Nigerian Rural Households’ Consumption Structure, and Well-Being, Equity, and Inclusion: Creating Access to Library Resources for Students Living with Vision Impairment in e-Learning Environments in Nigerian Universities, and Mitigating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Frontline Nigerian Army Personnel using Stress Inoculation Therapy are among the documents approved under Humanities and Social Science.
By its mandate, the TETFund established the National Research Fund (NRF) Grant to support innovative research that examines topics pertinent to Nigerian society’s needs, including electricity and energy, health, security, agriculture, employment, and wealth creation. As a real tool to boost the economy and raise the living conditions of Nigerians, the intervention gained more momentum under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the statement continued.
